Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has said that Man United's biggest failure since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement was not being able to sign Jurgen Klopp to Old Trafford ahead of Liverpool. After Ferguson's retirement, United have officially linked the German coach as a possible successor.
Clough, who was managing Damon at the time, held discussions with United and officials, but rejected the club's project and more emphasis on business. After that, Klopp stayed in Germany and after another 2 years, he moved to Liverpool.
Since Ferguson's departure, the Red Devils have appointed 8 managers, including an interim coach, over a period of 9 years, with Eric Tan Hart currently in charge of the club. However, the 20-time points champion has struggled this season as well, losing both of his opening two matches.
Many have attributed United's failures in recent years to the mismanagement of the Glazer family, but Murphy believes United could have overcome these challenges and even won trophies if they had hired Klopp as their manager.
Murphy said: "My particular compliment to Jurgen Klopp is that every Manchester United fan who will be booing him at Old Trafford on Monday night will want him at Old Trafford.
If Klotz had been United manager they wouldn't have been trophyless for 5 years like this. Liverpool will not be able to win all the trophies. If I could have appointed Pep Guardiola, I would have.
United may be more difficult for Klopp to handle. The pressure will be there to sign top players, and it will be interesting to see how those in charge would react if they said they would only sign Mane from Southampton over Pogba in 2016.
But Klopp will overcome all these difficulties at Old Trafford. He's a tough guy, and he knows how he wants to play. He knows which players will fit his style. He may not be as influential on the move as he was at Liverpool, but he can convince those in charge.
But Klopp immediately recognized the advantages of moving to Liverpool. The club has a great sporting director like Michael Edwards, so I knew it would work for him.
What I feel is that Klopp is the one who will bring his footballing philosophy to United rather than anyone else's." He said.
